The Final Report of the President's Task Force on Victims of Crime recognized the important role that educators can play in assisting victims and preventing crime. The task force urged school authorities to take the following immediate actions:

Evaluating the Problem of School Violence

There is no denying that violence in our schools is one of the most troubling issues of our time. Recent reports by the National Education Association indicate a dramatic increase in the incidence of school violence. From students and parents to teachers and administrators, everyone seems hard pressed to find a solution to curb this erupting trend. Even police and politicians are struggling with this issue which does not appear to have an easy answer.

We don't have a definitive answer either. However, we do know that the same basic avoidance, prevention, defense and escape techniques we teach to all individuals to stay safe are applicable to any situation, whether it occurs in the workplace, home, in public or at school. Again, the key to personal safety lies in the ability to recognize and avoid or prevent dangerous situations. It's also important to learn some back-up defense and escape strategies for situations in which preventative measures fail.
